Help…I Hear Birds In My Chimney

This time of year we field many phone calls related to birds in the chimney. Below are some facts and solutions you may find helpful.

  • The birds are likely Chimney Swifts
  • Chimney Swifts are a federally protected bird under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act
  • It is against the law to alter the birds and their habitat in any way
  • The sound you hear will become louder as the eggs are hatched and the babies are born
  • They can arrive as early as March and migrate to Peru as late as November
  • The swifts will leave the chimney approximately 30 days after they are hatched

So What Do I Do?

  • If the sound becomes intolerable you can close the damper if it is not a top-sealing model, next stuff insulation inside the fireplace. This should decrease the sounds.
  • When you no longer hear the birds in the chimney, call Fluesbrothers at 913-236-7141 to schedule a cleaning and inspection. We will ensure all bird droppings are cleaned from the chimney, the abandoned nest is removed and, most importantly, we will find the point of entry and correct it so another flock does not make your chimney their temporary home.

We have the answers to a lot more questions our customers frequently ask. That’s the thing about Fluesbrothers…we’re committed to finding the right answers for all your chimney service needs!
